  • One woman is fed up with her mother-in-law

  • In a Reddit post, the woman shared that her mother-in-law recently snuck into her home while they were away on vacation

One woman is trying to navigate her relationship with her mother-in-law after she entered her house while the woman and her husband were away.

In a Reddit post, the woman explained that she left town for the holidays on a Monday morning while her husband was at work. Before leaving, she wrote "a very sweet special note" for her husband, and left it "on the couch where I know he would find it."

“About 15 minutes before he got home from work I see on my Ring camera my mother-in-law going into my house," she wrote. "The door was locked. Which means she took the spare key and went into our house (we live on the same property, but different houses)."

She noted that her mother-in-law was inside the home for roughly 10 minutes, but since they don't have cameras inside, "who knows what she was doing in there."

“When my husband got home, he said that there was Christmas presents on the kitchen table for him. And I asked him if he got the note I left him and he said he couldn’t find it… so I figured maybe the fan blew it on the ground and it’s under the couch,” she continued.

Her husband ended up joining her on the trip, so they were both out of town for the holidays, leaving their cat at home.

"We have a cat and her food and water are inside, but she goes potty outside through the cat door," the woman explained.

However, on Christmas Eve, her mother-in-law called and said she saw the cat in the window and "wanted to know if she could come in the house to let the cat out."

Unsure why her mother-in-law "wanted it in our house again," the poster said it wouldn't be necessary, since the cat had food and a cat door to use the bathroom whenever needed.

"Well, when we got home yesterday, there was cat piss and s--- everywhere because the door leading to the cat door was shut," the woman wrote. "First, I [asked] my husband if he shut the door he said no why would I do that? We never shut the door. So then I just assumed maybe I did it."

“But then I started to look for the note that I left him. I can’t find it anywhere. I looked in my trash can. I looked in our dumpster outside. I looked under the couch. I looked under the rug. I looked everywhere so unless if our cat ate our letter, my mother-in-law stole it," she continued.

The poster noted that if her mother-in-law is "malicious" enough to "steal a letter that was personal to my husband," then she wouldn't put it past her to shut the door so that their cat was "stuck inside."

The woman decided that she needed to have a conversation with her mother-in-law about what happened, but also asked people on Reddit if she was overreacting.

People in the comments section insisted that her husband needs to set a boundary with his mom, while others suggested they change the locks.

“Get a keypad lock so you don’t have a spare key. Or change the locks and location of your key. I’d be furious,” one person wrote.

“Change the locks and let your husband have the conversation with her,” another person added.
