NEW YORK (PIX11) — New York is bracing for a winter snowstorm that is likely to bring more than a foot of snow to the Big Apple, according to the National Weather Service.
“A major winter storm will bring major disruption to transportation and daily life Sunday into Sunday Night from heavy snowfall/wintry mix, and near whiteout conditions during snowfall, wrote the NWS. ” Lingering significant travel likely impacts late Sunday Night into Monday. Prolonged period of frigid conditions through late next week. Prepare for societal and infrastructure impacts due to the prolonged, deep cold.”

With frigid temperatures and snow about to bury the city, here is how city agencies will respond.
The New York City Police Department and the Fire Department of New York will maintain operational capacity, according to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
311 has activated a severe weather tagging system.
The New York City Department of Sanitation is preparing roads and will start plowing when there are 2 inches of snow on the ground.
The NYC Department of Transportation will work with DSNY to keep the city moving.
The MTA is also working to keep the city moving, according to a social media post by Mamdani.
The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation will salt area parks and monitor for downed trees.
The NYC Environmental Protection plans to keep water facilities running.
The New York City Department of Homeless Services is working to get New Yorkers inside to keep them dry.
The New York City Emergency Management Department is tracking the storm and helping coordinate agency response in real time.
“Our administration will keep providing updates to make sure New Yorkers are informed, prepared, and safe,” Mamdani wrote on X.
