The administration of US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday (7 Jan) that the United States will take control of key decisions made by Venezuela’s interim leadership and oversee the country’s oil sales "indefinitely" after the removal of President Nicolas Maduro.
The assertion of US authority comes even as Venezuela’s interim leader Delcy Rodriguez said there is no foreign power governing Caracas. Trump’s comments mark a clear claim of dominance over the oil-rich South American country.
Maduro and his wife were seized by US special forces in a swift operation on Saturday and taken to New York to face drug charges. The operation underscored what Trump has referred to as the "Donroe Doctine" of US dominance over its immediate region.
