A baby dolphin, estimated to be 2 months old, was found stranded Wednesday morning, Jan. 7, just south of the New Smyrna Jetty, according to Volusia County Beach Safety.
News of the beached dolphin was brought to the attention of wildlife photographer and mental health counselor Shelley Lynch, who called the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute for help. The institute talked her through pulling the calf out of the water, Lynch recalled in a Jan. 7 Facebook post.
Ocean Rescue lifeguards and beachgoers worked together to care for the dolphin until the team from SeaWorld Hubbs arrived to transport it for rehabilitation.
