A park in Leicester was cordoned off after two men were injured when they were reportedly attacked with a metal pole, police said.

Officers were called to Castle Gardens, close to St Nicholas Circle, at 02:00 GMT by East Midlands Ambulance Service.

The injuries to both men – who are in their 60s – are not thought to be life-threatening, but they remain in hospital, according to Leicestershire Police.

A cordon has been put in place, and police said they were studying CCTV from the area but also appealed for witnesses.

The attack is believed to have happened inside a hut in the park between midnight and 02:00, police said.

Det Sgt Vicki Hudson said: "Our investigation is very much in its early stages, and we are working to establish what has happened in the park and the circumstances leading up to the incident.

"We have a cordon in place at the scene of the assault to allow for a thorough examination and officers are also carrying out CCTV and other local inquiries.

"I would like to hear from anyone who was in the area in the early hours of this morning."
