A convicted killer who stalked Cheryl Tweedy has been returned to jail after being “secretly” freed after serving just three months in prison.

Daniel Bannister, 51, was jailed for a year last September after showing up four times at the home the singer shares with her eight-year-old son, Bear.

The Sun reported that he has been quietly released in recent weeks after being allowed out on licence, on the condition of being “of good behaviour”.

The paper spotted Bannister grinning and vaping outside his halfway house in south London, just hours before he ended up behind bars again.

The paper reported that he was locked up again after alcohol was found in his room, breaching the conditions of his licence.

According to an HM Prison and Probation Service spokesperson: “As this case shows, we do not hesitate to send offenders back to prison where necessary if they break the rules.”

At Reading Crown Court in September 2025, Bannister was sentenced to 12 months in jail for breaching a restraining order by appearing at the former Girls Aloud star’s house for a fourth time that June.

He was also hit with a new restraining order which prevents him from contacting Tweedy.

The court heard how Bannister showed up at the singer’s home by taxi on June 19, just before 10pm and rang the intercom system twice before looking over her gate. He claimed Tweedy had invited him to her home over Microsoft Teams.

During the hearing, the court heard Tweedy “immediately panicked” and was “terrified” when she noticed him outside her home, and that she had feared for the safety of her eight-year-old son.

In a victim impact statement, the singer said she was “stunned” when Bannister showed up at her home again, and described how she had been forced to recruit personal security.

She said: “Each time he returns, the worry of his intentions intensifies. I’m worried, nervous and on edge every time I open my gate. No person should have to feel this way.

“Daniel has made my young child scared,” she added.

Addressing Bannister, Judge Alan Blake said: “She does not wish any contact with you, and you are causing her anxiety. You have shown defiance of the court order. You need to draw a line under that behaviour.”

He was previously jailed in 2012 for 30 months for manslaughter after attacking a man who died of his injuries.

Rajendra Patel, 48, died because of an injury to his leg at a south London YMCA shelter. Bannister pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
