Augusta area residents can expect temperatures in the high 70s and low 50s this week, with clear skies throughout.

Drew Hickok, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Columbia, South Carolina, said on Monday that much of the CSRA was covered with fog, caused by moisture in the air. He expected to vanish by mid-morning.

“We have a lot of low-level moisture in place, and the winds are pretty much calm or non-existent,” said Hickok. “So that moisture is able to settle underneath, what we call an inversion. As temperatures start cooling, your temperature and your dew points are about equal, which causes a kind of low cloud that's touching the surface. That's what causes it to form.”

Hickok said temperatures on Monday should get up into the low to mid-60s. Continuing through the week. "It's mostly staying on the dry side.”

Forecast for the Augusta area:

Monday: High 64, Low 47.

Tuesday: High 69, Low 54.

Wednesday: High 74, Low 51.

Thursday: High 74, Low 56.

Friday: High 75, Low 58.

“The main story is we’ll see above normal temperatures by (Tuesday),” said Hickok. “Temperatures could reach 70. Then Wednesday through Friday, which will probably be into the mid, potentially even upper 70s. So it'll be really warm, but staying dry.

"For reference, the record was 78 degrees in 1949. We’ll be within a few degrees of that. Saturday, we could see chances of precipitation. Chances could move in as early as Friday.”
